Elaine
Slusher, a
long-time resident of Placitas and a Signature Member of both the New Mexico
Watercolor Society and the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, is
interested in strong composition as well as the relationships of one color to
another and of one shape to another. Most of Slusher's paintings are of people,
including children, and of animals, and express how these subjects relate to one
another. Her watercolors, which have received many awards in juried exhibits,
hang in private collections in the US and Europe.
This season Slusher will be showing her retablos in October.
She says:
"I have lived in New Mexico
over 50 years and first saw retablos at the New Mexico Museum in Santa
Fe. Every village, church and private home had its patron saint.
A Santo might be punished for not fulfilling its role and be turned to
the wall until a request was granted. The artist worked to meet
a specific need of the community, and the product expressed its
values. I am charmed by the images
and have painted retablos off and on for years." |
