Roger
Preston Blatz was born in Lake Jackson, Texas near Houston. In his early
years he lived in several different locations including Dallas, Texas, Las
Vegas, New Mexico, Laramie, Wyoming, and, finally, Kansas City, Missouri.
In 1974 he started studying geology at the University of
Missouri-Columbia with photography as a hobby.
Discovering that photography had become his passion and geology a hobby
he decided to pursue photography as his life’s work.
With his wife, Roxanne, he moved to New York City in 1981 to attend the
Germain School of Photography. After
graduation and for the next 20 years he worked in commercial photography in New
York City through 2002. This work
included product photography for catalogs, advertising and jewelry.
He also photographed artists’ work.
In architecture Blatz photographed scale models, interiors and exteriors
of both commercial and residential spaces.
In 2002 Roger and Roxanne moved to Albuquerque in order to be nearer both
their families and to enjoy the great outdoors and the wonderful scenery that
they had come to love through their longtime associations with New Mexico
throughout the years. In 2003 they
built their home in Placitas. As
Preston Photography, Roger and Roxanne, continue to pursue their dreams of
providing beautiful, interesting photographs in both commercial and artistic
venues.

Blatz says:
"I
love the play of light—especially as it pertains to shape, texture
shadows and color.
If I can control that light I find it most interesting and
challenging.
If not, perhaps I can study it and make the best use of light at
a specific time, condition or environment.
With that in mind I photograph what is before me.
Sometimes the “story” in the image is beauty.
Sometimes it’s whimsy, curiosity, incongruity or humor.
To date the majority of my work is on film—mostly color
transparency.
In 2002 I began to shoot more as a digital capture."
