    Independence Day in Placitas:

PAS in the 4th of July Parades over the years

On July 4, 2007,  the Placitas Artists Series Kazoo Philharmonic serenaded onlookers at the annual Fourth of July Parade in the Village of Placitas. Led by semi-conductor Gary Libman, the renowned Kazoo Philharmonic performed patriotic, Americana, and classical renditions transcribed for kazoo band on the spot. The group was augmented at this special performance by several old friends, and former board members.

Every year Placitas celebrates the Fourth of July with a parade. Beginning at about 11 am, the parade wanders east down Highway 165 from Placitas Heights into the village, past Las Placitas Presbyterian Church (LPPC), then turns up San Antonio, looping back onto Highway 165.  Parade participants include the Fire Department, the Sheriff's Posse, antique cars, bike riders, and local businesses. Candy is thrown from the paraders to the spectators lining the roads, and everyone has a blast!  Refreshments are sold by members of the LPPC Mother's Day Out program.  This year the water spray guns kept us wet & cool!

In the year 2000, PAS Board members decided to join in on the fun. After searching for months to find seasoned Kazoo players, they organized the PAS Kazoo Philharmonic, which even includes an accomplished slide whistle player! The ensemble plays everything from Beethoven to Sousa marches. "Yankee Doodle Dandy" is their signature piece. The PAS float -- a trailer pulled by a pickup truck --which is exquisitely decorated each year  by some PAS artists, showcases this extraordinary group of musicians to the spectators.

The first two years, former Vice President Sally Curro took on the role of leading the "band" and was dubbed the PAS "semi-conductor."

Next Fourth of July, why not plan on attending the parade and hear our marvelous players? If you'd like to audition for a spot in the band,
please speak to any of the current Board members.
